The 1st of January always begs us to consider our future, dream of achievements and pose our ambitions against the back drop or our reality. I have found that goals are more easily achieved if they are written down. For many years I have published for my staff, my kids and myself a “Goal Kit” that is about a dozen pages long.

Personal convictions can be supplanted with FEAR…(False Expectations Appearing Real). This year, my inner critic, the voice inside my head, said “why bother, people have their own agendas and methods, your getting old and this approach is too low tech and out of touch in this high tech world where there are hundreds of web sites devoted to goals and self help programs” so I didn’t bother to pass them out.

PHsst…The real estate bubble did not burst; but some of the air seems to be escaping from it. Inventories have grown and homes are staying on the market longer. A week does not go by without a disparaging comment being seen in the news about the troubled housing sector. I recently read that 46.7% of all statistics are made up. Housing will always be in demand, people need shelter and the world population is growing.

NOW could be the time to strike if you are looking for a deal. There are some bargains to be had. Realtors have watched struggling owners attempt to sell but the buyers are few. The rapid appreciation that previously reduced the risks associated with extreme leverage (100% financed adjustable rate loans) has vanished. Marginal properties languish on the block while. Trophy homes and desirable commercial properties are still moving. Good real estate will always be in demand.






Dynamic markets move like the wind. They resist the control of buyers and sellers with equanimity. Wages are showing signs of going up and this will help start the next wave of buyer optimism. Unemployment is still relatively low. We wait for the next revolution in the cycle of housing prices to be reported. The expectations for the new year is that the markets will firm and a bottom will be reached….sometime.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, graphed as a triangle whose tip is topped with self actualization, contends that as basic human needs are met we grow new needs. According to the Pew Research Center we need more every year to meet the demands of daily life. Clothes dryers, microwave ovens and cell phones, at one time considered luxuries are now required to live a normal American life. As our life becomes more complex so do our needs. Individuals seek higher attainments and thus cultivate wants into needs for happiness and fulfillment. Maslow probably never had any of the above items. Was he self actualized or just looking for a better place to live?

New goals are the order of the end of the year. Next year will be better than this one. My faith gets shaken as I drive to the office on US 101 in Santa Rosa. It’s a new year, but you’d never know it if you were on 101 near the downtown exit. Stalled traffic in the new year seems just as bad as it did last year. This too shall pass. I have faith.
